Surgical Removal of Acne
For those with severe acne, even professional skin treatments such as laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels may not provide satisfactory results. For these men and women, a procedure called acne extraction may be the best option. During acne extraction, dermatologist Dr. Candace Spann will remove a large acne cyst, so that it becomes less painful, less visible, and less likely to leave a scar. Large or deep acne scars can also be removed surgically in some cases. During this procedure, she goes deep into the root to unclog the pore and surgically extract the infected particle.
Laser Treatment of Acne
Dr. Spann may attempt laser treatment before extraction. Acne laser surgery is able to address acne deep at the root, cleaning the infected pores. During an in-office appointment, the laser cleans, purifies and replenishes each acne spot and the surrounding area. A special vacuum gently lifts the acne impurities closer to the skin’s surface, and a broadband light is used to destroy acne-causing bacteria. Once the acne pores have been treated and are still “open”, topical ointments are applied to help keep the area clean and replenished.
